The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant [then Corporal] Carol Sweat (ASN: 34099386), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Sicily during the period from July through October 1943. Displaying outstanding fearlessness in the face of heavy enemy machine gun, rifle, and mortar fire, Sergeant Sweat rallied his men and led them to his company’s exposed flank where he directed the destruction of several enemy machine guns. His tireless efforts inspired his men and did much to insure his company’s success. Sergeant Sweat’s gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
