The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Harold F. Stevenson (ASN: 0-453757), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in North Africa and Sicily, during the period from March to August 1943. Although entirely surrounded by the enemy and subjected to direct machine gun and rifle fire, Lieutenant Stevenson, by his coolness and courage, maintained the high morale of his men until evening permitted a successful withdrawal with a minimum of casualties. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.

Stevenson (ASN: 0-453757), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in North Africa and Sicily, during the period from March through July 1943. Although under constant enemy observation, Lieutenant Stevenson proceeded forward under heavy fire and located several well-hidden enemy strongpoints. This information enabled him to destroy these positions with the accurate fire of his mortar squad. Lieutenant Stevenson’s gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.

When extremely accurate enemy artillery fire endangered our positions, Lieutenant Stevenson, displaying great courage and devotion to duty, reconnoitered deep into enemy territory, located the emplacements, and skillfully directed our artillery fire in the destruction of the enemy. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
