The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Technical Sergeant Emery B. Johnson (ASN: 39079335), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 17th Infantry Regiment, 7th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Leyte, Philippine Islands, on 28 October 1944. When enemy machine guns threatened the left flank of his company’s advance, Sergeant Johnson, under intense fire and in full view of the enemy, secured the aid of an M-8 tank destroyer to attack the enemy pill boxes. While personally leading and directing he tank destroyer’s fire over terrain continually swept by enemy automatic weapons fire he was morally wounded. The gallant example set by Sergeant Johnson raised the morale of the assault units and expedited the advance to and capture of the objective. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
