The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Edward C. Stewart (ASN: 12003141), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Battery A, 5th Field Artillery Battalion, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy east of Oran, Algeria, 10 November 1942. During he Oran Offensive, radio communications having failed, Private Stewart displayed exceptional courage in crawling approximately six hundred yards through heavy machine gun and rifle fire, and unrolling wire to re-establish communications. Private Stewart’s disregard of personal danger enabled an artillery concentration to be laid on machine gun nests holding up the advance of the infantry. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
