The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal [then Private First Class] Michael A. Tomasko (ASN: 33146059), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company L, 3d Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in North Africa and Sicily, during the period from March through July 1943. While reconnoitering territory beyond our front lines, Corporal Tomasko was challenged by two enemy sentinels. He quickly destroyed them, continued on his mission, and successfully returned with valuable information. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.

With his unit threatened during action by strong enemy resistance, Corporal Tomasko made his way daringly over open terrain crisscrossed by small arms fire in order to reconnoiter hostile positions and select ways to destroy them. His courage inspired his men and contributed to their subsequent successful advance against enemy forces. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
