The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Field Artillery), [then Second Lieutenant] Emmett C. Smith (ASN: 0-1167226), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters Battery, 5th Field Artillery Battalion, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Sicily, during July and August 1943. Lieutenant Smith voluntarily accompanied a pilot in a low-powered observation plane over enemy lines and assisted in distributing rations and medical supplies to two infantry battalions located in an otherwise inaccessible position. Although this aircraft was fired upon and struck by the enemy, the mission was successfully accomplished. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
