Headquarters, 1st Infantry Division, General Orders No. 41 (August 28, 1943)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Edward H. Simmer (ASN: 0-1310642), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company H, 2d Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in North Africa and Sicily, during the period from April through July 1943. During an assault on strongly fortified enemy positions, Lieutenant Simmer received a painful leg wound. Shortly thereafter, the force of our attack bean to falter. Disregarding his wound, Lieutenant Simmer reentered combat, rallied his men, and by the extraordinary courage and devotion to duty thus displayed, inspired his men to continue the attack and take their objective. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
