The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Technician Fifth Grade Paul Shimek, Jr. (ASN: 36162558), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters Company, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in the vicinity of Bornheim, Germany, on 8 March 1945. Despite an intense enemy artillery barrage, Corporal Shimek, with utter disregard for personal safety, courageously drove a vehicle over heavily mined roads and delivered vital messages to forward units. Corporal Shimek’s gallant actions and outstanding devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
