Headquarters, 1st Infantry Division, General Orders No. 59 (October 14, 1943)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Master Sergeant William J. Smith (ASN: 6128493), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Service Battery, 33d Field Artillery Battalion, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Sicily, on or about 10 July 1943. When the enemy heavily shelled, bombed, and strafed his battery immediately after it had reached shore during landing operations, Sergeant Smith, displaying exceptional coolness and courage under fire, made repeated trips across the fire-swept beach and removed valuable equipment to covered positions. His exemplary conduct on this occasion is worthy of the highest praise. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
