The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Major (Quartermaster Corps) John J. King (ASN: 0-421524), United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy of the United States while serving with the 1st Quartermaster Company, 1st Infantry Division, in action in Austria, on 6 April 1946. While motor boating on Atter Sea, near Saewalchen, Austria, Major King observed another officer in the party, Lieutenant Feldman, in a nearby boat having difficulty starting the boat’s motor. Directing his own craft to the side of the disabled boat, he proceeded to tow it to the shore when it was suddenly upset, throwing the other officer into the icy water. When the Lieutenant, handicapped by combat boots, began to sink, Major King leaped overboard and swam to the side of his fellow officer and pulled him to the surface. He then swam toward a power launch in the area, keeping the Lieutenant afloat until they both were pulled into the craft and rushed to shore. By his unhesitating and courageous action, Major King undoubtedly saved the life of his brother officer. The exemplary courage and heroism displayed by Major King reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
