The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Gerald Sherman (ASN: 0-386005), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Sicily in 1943. Captain Hudson withdrew his Infantry company to more tenable ground during a savage enemy thrust, regrouped his men, and launched a successful counterattack, inflicting heavy losses on the enemy. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.

    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry), [then First Lieutenant] Gerald Sherman (ASN: 0-386005), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in North Africa and Sicily, during the period from March through July 1943. During an important attack upon the enemy, Captain Sherman, although subjected to heavy enemy artillery fire, continually exposed himself to contact his battalion commander when telephone communications had been destroyed by enemy fire. His many personal risks inspired and gave confidence to his men. Captain Sherman’s gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
