The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry), [then Second Lieutenant] John M. Semanchyk (ASN: 0-1291180), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company I, 3d Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in North Africa and Sicily, during the period from March through July 1943. On innumerable occasions during his unit’s combat operations, Lieutenant Semanchyk distinguished himself by his brilliant and courageous leadership in the face of heavy enemy fire. He volunteered on countless hazardous missions, each time returning with information vital to the success of subsequent assaults upon the enemy. His keen tactical judgment and tenacity of purpose often enabled his platoon to capture seemingly impregnable enemy strongholds. Lieutenant Semanchyk’s gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
