The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Joseph A. Segit (ASN: 12003512), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in North Africa and Sicily, during the period from March to August 1943. During a strong enemy tank attack, Sergeant Segit exposed himself to direct enemy fire and succeeded in retarding the enemy’s advance by the effective operation of his weapon. IN the course of this bold action, Sergeant Segit was wounded. Despite intense pain, he rendered his vehicle useless to the enemy prior to withdrawal. Sergeant Segit’s gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
