The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class [then Private] Oscar C. Smith (ASN: 13001994), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in North Africa and Sicily in 1943. During a coordinated enemy tank attack on his battalion’s position, Private Smith exercised keen judgment and tactical skill in delivering effective machine gun fire on the advancing enemy infantry. When his machine gun ammunition became exhausted, he utilized his rifle to inflict many casualties on the enemy. His untiring zeal and initiative enabled his battalion to launch a successful counterattack. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
