The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technician Fifth Grade Fred E. Simmons (ASN: 7003850), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the Medical Detachment, 3d Battalion, 18th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in the vicinity of Tunisia on 22 February 1943. When two men were seriously wounded during a concentrated enemy bombardment, Corporal Simmons under heavy enemy fire crawled to these men, dressed their wounds and assisted them to a place of safety. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
