Headquarters, 1st Infantry Division, General Orders No. 33 (July 26, 1943)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant John Slogick (ASN: 13012468), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company D, 1st Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in North Africa and Sicily, during the period from February through July. When enemy troops had established a machine gun nest overlooking his company’s defenses, Sergeant Slogick, although exposed to their fire, directed much effective mortar fire on this position as to contribute materially to the decisive defeat of the enemy. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
