The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Vance I. Shield, Jr. (ASN: 0-479208), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company G, 2d Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Sicily, on 5 August 1943. During an intense and concentrated enemy artillery barrage, Lieutenant Shield advanced over open terrain in an effort to locate sheltered positions from which his machine guns could bring more effective fire upon the enemy. Although mortally wounded in this attempt, Lieutenant Shield’s actions materially assisted his company in its engagement with the enemy. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
