The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private Richard P. Schlies (ASN: 36280244), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company E, 2d Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Sicily, on 4 August 1943. Despite intense enemy small arms, mortar, and machine gun fire, Private Schlies advanced over difficult terrain to a position from which he could most effectively fire his light machine gun. While setting up his weapon, he was mortally wounded by a bursting shell. His strong desire to be of maximum assistance in defeating the enemy inspired the members of his organization. Private Schlies’ gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
