The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Joseph C. Santanello (ASN: 31213181), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in North Africa and Sicily, during the period from April through August 1943. While making his way to the rear after having been painfully injured, Private Santanello observed his company withdrawing under heavy enemy fire. He returned to is organization and took up a firing position under heavy machine gun, rifle, and mortar fire with the full knowledge that lack of mobility caused by his injury would make him subject to almost certain capture in the event the enemy broke through. He remained at his position until he received a direct order from his commanding officer to leave the area. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
