The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Field Artillery) Francis E. Silva, Jr. (ASN: 0-417672), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Battery B, 32d Field Artillery Battalion, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Sicily, during July and August 1943. Captain Silva coolly and accurately directed his battery’s fire upon advancing enemy tanks and inflicted severe damage until his position became untenable. Then, although subjected to direct enemy fire, he moved his guns to prearranged alternate positions. His gallantry and courage under heavy fire and his sound tactical judgment contributed materially to the defeat of the enemy. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
