The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Captain (Medical Corps) Morris A. Shapiro (ASN: 0-358152), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the Medical Detachment, 32d Field Artillery Battalion, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in North Africa and Sicily, during the period from April through August 1943. When all other attempts had failed, Captain Shapiro, at grave risk to his own life, crept forward beyond our front lines and evacuated a seriously wounded officer who was lying exposed to constant enemy shell and small arms fire. His exemplary conduct inspired the members of his battalion. Captain Shapiro’s gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
