The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Joseph A. Sienkiewicz (Seinkiewicz) (ASN: 13022281), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company E, 2d Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division in the vicinity of Mateur, Tunisia, on 9 May 1943. During an enemy attack on friendly positions, Private Sienkiewicz skillfully directed the defense of his squad’s position. He constantly exposed himself to heavy enemy fire to effectively direct the fire of his squad’s weapons. His keen judgment materially aided his company in repelling the enemy. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
