The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Second Lieutenant (Infantry), [then Master Sergeant] Robert K. Golden (ASN: 0-2263695), United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy of the United States while serving with Company A, 1st Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action in Korea. On 23 July 1952, Lieutenant Golden, while a member of Company A, 1st Battalion, was returning from a combat patrol in a boat, which was crossing the Imjim River, when it suddenly sank in midstream. As he swam to a shallow place, he heard the cries of help from drowning men who were combat loaded, including helmets and steel vests. Lieutenant Golden immediately discarded his equipment, swam out and brought a man back to shallow water. Still hearing cries for help and although exhausted, he went out twice to save two men who were struggling to reach shore. Lieutenant Golden’s heroic actions, which saved the lives of three men, reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
