The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Corporal Glen Z. Wallace (ASN: RA-19378012), United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy of the United States while serving with as a member of Company A, 10th Engineer Combat Battalion, 3d Infantry Division, in action in Korea. On the morning of 27 July 1952, Corporal Wallace was a member of the platoon of Company A, 1st Battalion, which was assigned the mission of intercepting debris, with the aid of a boat, in the Imjin River, on the upstream side of the Mallard Bridge, in the vicinity of Yonchon, Korea. This action was necessary to prevent damage and possible destruction of the bridge. As they proceeded toward a sizeable piece of debris, the boat upset and was washed against the bridge by the swift current. Several of the crew, including Corporal Wallace, were thrown into the water. When one of the men cried for help, Corporal Wallace went to his aid and shared his life jacket with the drowning man. The life jacket could not support both men however, so Corporal Wallace unselfishly relinquished the jacket. He then endeavored to swim to shore, but was drowned in the attempt. As a result of Corporal Wallace’s supreme sacrifice, the life of a fellow soldier was saved. Corporal Wallace’s outstanding gallantry, initiative, and devotion to duty reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
