Headquarters, 1st Infantry Division Artillery, General Orders No. 8 (December 21, 1943)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Field Artillery) Robert C. Rush, Jr. (ASN: 0-417670), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters, Division Artillery, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in North Africa in November 1943. During a serious phase immediately preceding the crisis in the battle, communication was completely disrupted. Several messengers sent to a Tank Destroyer Unit had failed. Lieutenant Rush was given an urgent message. With disregard for his own safety, he passed through heavy enemy fire and persisted until he had delivered the message. The action of Lieutenant Rush contributed to the final repulse of the enemy and was in accord with the highest traditions of military service and reflected great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
