Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 107 (April 26, 1953)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Joseph Piecukonis (ASN: RA-13405020), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company I, 3d Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On the afternoon of 24 November 1952, Company I, 3d Battalion, of which Private Piecukonis was a wire and radioman, was assigned the mission of defending friendly outposts “Jackson Heights” and “Hill 270”, in the vicinity of Hak Tong-Ni, Korea. When the wire communications lines between the two outposts were severed by the hostile mortar and artillery barrage, Private Piecukonis, realizing the necessity of reestablishing communications, volunteered to lay a new line. Proceeding from “Hill 270”, under direct hostile observation and fire, he continued at his task until his mission was completed. Upon his return from “Jackson Heights”, he laid an alternate line over a different route, affording double insurance that communications would be maintained. Private Piecukonis’ outstanding heroism, initiative and devotion to duty reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
