The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Charles W. Roadman (ASN: 33391710), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company I, 3d Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Sicily in July and August 1943. When nine enemy tanks penetrated the right flank of his company during an important battle and threatened the position of his entire battalion, Corporal Roadman, on his own initiative, in the face of hostile artillery and small arms fire, assisted in firing a captured enemy anti-tank gun. The effective fire of this weapon destroyed two tanks and compelled the others to withdraw. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
