The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Corporal Charles E. Jordan (ASN: RA-17333492), United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy of the United States while serving with Service Company, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action in Korea. On the night of 3 February 1953, Corporal Jordan was assisting in accomplishing the mission of moving the ammunition supply point in the vicinity of Sindae Dong, Korea, from its forward position to a rear area. He was unloading napalm bombs from a truck when the exploding mechanism on one of the bombs came loose, causing the bomb to start burning. Corporal Jordan immediately climbed into the vehicle and drove forward a short distance. He then put the truck in reverse and backed it up at a rapid rate, applying the brakes suddenly in an attempt to dump the burning material. He succeeded in his attempt but one of the bombs within the truck exploded and set fire to the others. Observing that he could not get all the burning material off, he drove the truck away from the main portion of the napalm to prevent the entire vehicle from catching fire and the exploding napalm from igniting the mortar ammunition stacked nearby. As a result of Corporal Jordan’s actions, the truck engine was undamaged and valuable stores of ammunition were saved from destruction. Corporal Jordan’s outstanding heroism, initiative and devotion to duty reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
