Headquarters, 1st Infantry Division, General Orders No. 2 (February 2, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Frank A. Rizzo (ASN: 0-2055149), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company F, 2d Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in North Africa and Sicily in 1943. When a machine gun squad was threatened with complete encirclement by a rapidly advancing enemy force, Lieutenant Rizzo, at grave risk to himself and with great skill, daringly moved to the position, rallied the men, and led the way to safety. Lieutenant Rizzo’s coolness and tactical judgment under heavy enemy mortar and machine gun fire undoubtedly saved these men from certain capture. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
