The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Sergeant First Class Hezekiah McIntyre (ASN: RA-15272285), United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy of the United States while serving with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action in Korea. On the night of 13 April 1953, the Anti-tank and Mine Platoon of which Sergeant McIntyre was squad leader, was setting out napalm mines north of outpost “Dick”, in the vicinity of Yongho-Dong, Korea. When one of the mines suddenly exploded, all the members of the platoon were knocked off their feet. Upon gaining his composure, Sergeant McIntyre realized that the man who was working on the mine was lying unconscious somewhere in the burning napalm and immediately dashed into the blaze to rescue him. After beating out the flames engulfing the soldier with his bare hands, he assisted in evacuating him to friendly lines. As a result of his actions, the life of a fellow soldier was saved. Sergeant McIntyre’s outstanding heroism, initiative and devotion to duty reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
