The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Albert B. Curtiss (ASN: 35892341), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 407th Infantry Regiment, 102d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in the European Theater of Operations on or about 23 February 1945. On the day of the Roer River crossing, after a heavy artillery barrage Private First Class Curtiss’ unit made the crossing at Linnich, going over in assault boats until a bridge could be maintained. An emergency arose when his squad ran out of ammunition. Some distance away, another machinegun had been knocked out, and near it was a supply of ammunition. Although it was not in his line of duty, Private First Class Curtiss volunteered to go and get it. While returning with two boxes and only five yards away from his comrades, he was hit by enemy machine gun fire. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
