The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Robert L. Wilson (ASN: 33446135), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters Company, 2d Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in the vicinity of Eilendorf, Germany, on 16 September 1944. When the enemy launched a bitter counterattack upon his battalion’s position and communications were severed, Private Wilson, despite an intense mortar, artillery, and small arms barrage, courageously transported a radio across perilous terrain to a command post. He then skillfully established and maintained vital contact between units of his organization, thereby aiding immeasurably in the repulse of the hostile assault. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
