The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V” (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant (Infantry) John D. Porterfield, Jr. (ASN: 0-955698), United States Army, for heroic achievement during ground operations against a hostile force as a member of Company A, 1st Battalion, 65th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 28 October 1952, Company A was assigned the mission of assaulting and capturing an enemy-occupied hill referred to as “Iron Horse”, in the vicinity of Chorwon, Korea. The friendly forces successfully accomplished their mission and were setting a perimeter of defense to safeguard their positions from enemy aggression, when they were suddenly subjected to an intense hostile mortar and artillery barrage, rendering them confused and disorganized. Realizing the gravity of the situation, Lieutenant Porterfield, unhesitatingly and with complete disregard for his personal safety began dashing about the shrapnel-torn area, shouting words of encouragement to the men and directing them to covered positions. The men became so inspired by his courageous feats and aggressive leadership that they quickly assumed the initiative and began extensive preparations to defend their positions against an impending enemy counter-attack. Remaining in exposed positions Lieutenant Porterfield continued to courageously lead the men, render medical aid to the casualties and frequently advanced through the enemy barrage to determine the location of the hostile artillery and mortar emplacements. While Lieutenant Porterfield was fearlessly rushing across the devastated area to assist a wounded soldier, he was mortally wounded by an incoming hostile artillery round. Lieutenant Porterfield’s outstanding heroism, selfless actions and inspirational leadership were highly instrumental in the successful evacuation of several of the friendly casualties and reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
