The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Field Artillery) Vernon E. R. Rawie (ASN: 0-226541), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Battery A, 5th Field Artillery Battalion, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy east of Oran, Algeria, on 10 November 1942. During the Oran Offensive, Captain Rawie, with utter disregard of personal danger, accompanied Company G, 16th Infantry Regiment, and advanced through heavy enemy machine gun and small arms fire. Captain Rawie directed the fire of his battery on targets close to the assault units in such a manner as to materially assist the advance of the Infantry. His efficiency and calmness were an example to the men of his detail and gave confidence to the infantry assault troops. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
