Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 15 (January 15, 1953)

The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V” (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) William E. White (ASN: 0-997195), United States Army, for heroic achievement during ground operations against a hostile force as a member of Company A, 1st Battalion, 65th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 28 October 1952, Company A was assigned the mission of attacking and securing an enemy-occupied hill referred to as “Jackson Heights”, in the vicinity of Chorwon, Korea. Shortly after the forward elements of the friendly unit began assaulting the foe, they encountered an intense enemy mortar and artillery barrage, causing them to become disorganized and halting their advance. Realizing the gravity of the situation, Lieutenant White disregarded his personal safety as he advanced through the hostile fire to the front of his platoon and by exhibiting aggressive leadership and shouting words of encouragement to his men, he so inspired them that they readily resumed their attack. Lieutenant White continued to courageously lead his men in attacking the foe and, upon reaching the crest of the hill, he joined them in subjecting the enemy to such an intense and murderous volume of fire that they suffered numerous casualties and were forced to withdraw in great confusion. Later while checking the safety of his men, Lieutenant White was mortally wounded by hostile mortar fire. Lieutenant White’s outstanding heroism and inspirational leadership enabled the friendly forces to successfully secure the hill and reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
