The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Leonardo Gumabo (ASN: 6738683), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters Battery, 92d Coast Artillery Regiment, Philippine Scouts, in action at Fort Mills, Philippine Islands, on 25 March 1942. During the course of a heavy bombing attack by enemy planes on Fort Mills, bombs falling in the Kindley Field Area set fire to a large barracks and wooded area near a garage. Corporal Gumabo, without regard for his personal safety and while enemy planes were operating overhead, aided in successfully controlling a fire in the area threatening to destroy a fuel storage tank and numerous defense installations. Fighting the fire was rendered more hazardous due to the fact that it was causing the explosion of ammunition in the immediate vicinity. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
