The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Morton K. Lange (ASN: 37622177), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the Medical Detachment, *** Chemical Battalion (Motorized), XII Corps, in action against an armed enemy on 20 January 1945, in Luxembourg. The 2d platoon of Company A, *** Chemical Battalion (Motorized) was in position near the town of ******, Luxembourg, in direct support of the *** Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division, in its assault on the enemy-held town. When word was received at the mortar position that Company E, *** Infantry Regiment had suffered many casualties who were lying in an area being heavily shelled and under small arms fire, and that assistance was desperately needed to evacuate the wounded, Private First Class Lange voluntarily left the mortar position of the platoon to which he was attached to go to the aid of the wounded men who were lying in an open field exposed to heavy enemy artillery fire. Private First Class Lange rendered medical aid and evacuated the wounded with complete disregard for his personal safety until all the wounded had been brought out of the shelled area. The courage and utter disregard for personal safety displayed by Private First Class Lange reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
