The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Field Artillery) Donald L. Platt (ASN: 0-1173744), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters Battery, 33d Field Artillery Battalion, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Sicily, during July and August 1943. Lieutenant Platt voluntarily piloted his low-powered observation plane over enemy lines and carried rations and medial supplies to two infantry battalions located in an otherwise inaccessible position. Although his aircraft was fired upon and struck by the enemy, Lieutenant Pratt successfully accomplished his mission. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
