The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Andrew A. Peworchik (ASN: 12003463), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company M, 3d Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in the vicinity of Assi ben Okba, Algeria, 8 November 1942. During the Oran Offensive, a motor patrol in which Sergeant Peworchik commanded the second vehicle, came under heavy enemy fire. When the officer commanding the patrol had been seriously wounded, Sergeant Peworchik personally manned the vehicle’s machine gun, opened fire upon the enemy, and drove off all resistance, thereby enabling two of his comrades to carry the wounded officer to cover. Sergeant Perorchik’s courage and coolness under fire were inspiring to his comrades. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
