The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major (Infantry) Carl W. Plitt (ASN: 0-24452), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in North Africa and Sicily in 1943. When Major Plitt and a fellow officer, as members of a small advance regimental reconnaissance detail, met a strong enemy force, they courageously assisted in routing the enemy and capturing many prisoners, thus removing a threat to the combat team’s east flank. Major Plitt’s heroic initiative and aggressive leadership under fire facilitated the regional advance. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
