The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Sergeant Silas W. Armstrong, United States Army Air Forces, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy of the United States. When a P-47 aircraft crashed and burst into flames, entrapping an injured and helpless pilot, Sergeant Armstrong without regard for his own safety, dashed into the flames and standing on one side of the fuselage directly over the flame-enveloped fuel tanks, assisted in forcing the canopy open and carrying the pilot to safety. This cool and deliberate action saved the life of the pilot and reflects great credit upon Sergeant Armstrong and the Army Air Forces.
