The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V” to First Lieutenant (Field Artillery) Henry H. Emerson (ASN: 0-61053), United States Army, for heroic achievement during ground operations against a hostile force as a member of Battery A, 3d Antiaircraft Artillery (Automatic Weapons) Battalion (Self Propelled), 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 5 June 1951, near Chik’tan, Korea, Lieutenant Emerson’s platoon was given a mission of close support to the infantry during the crossing of the Hant’an River. Deploying his platoon on the south bank of the river in such a manner that he was able to deliver a covering fire for the initial laying of the hand line by the engineers and for the assault of the infantry, Lieutenant Emerson, ignoring the danger imposed upon him by the heavy hostile small arms and mortar fire, moved from weapon to weapon during the entire operation, directing fire upon the dug-in enemy on the opposite bank of the river. Lieutenant Emerson’s heroic and skillful application of effective fire upon the hostile force enabled the engineers and infantry to gain their objective with a minimum of casualties and reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
