The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to First Lieutenant (Field Artillery) Henry H. Emerson (ASN: 0-61053), United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy of the United States while serving with Battery A, 3d Antiaircraft Artillery (Automatic Weapons) Battalion (Self Propelled), 3d Infantry Division, in action in Korea. On 7 June 1951, while in direct support of the 10th Field Artillery Battalion near Chik’tan, Korea, an antiaircraft gun carriage caught fire. Running to investigate the shouts, Lieutenant Emerson found that the ammunition on the weapon was exploding and all personnel had taken cover. He immediately raced to the burning vehicle in a fearless attempt to extinguish the fire. Caught up by his exemplary courage, several men came forward to assist and the fire was extinguished. Lieutenant Emerson’s heroic actions were instrumental in relieving the potential threat to personnel and equipment and reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
