The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Master Sergeant Hugh L. Gibbs (ASN: RA-6359589), United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy of the United States while serving with Battery B, 10th Field Artillery Battalion, 3d Infantry Division, in action in Korea. On 28 May 1951, traffic on the main supply route southeast of Seoul, Korea, became badly jammed when an ammunition trailer caught fire. Although most of the occupants of the vehicles in the convoy immediately sought cover, Sergeant Gibbs quickly grabbed a shovel and ran forward. After courageously removing a round of ammunition which was smoldering in its fiber container, he placed it in a ditch near the side of the road and covered it with dirt. Sergeant Gibbs then extinguished the fire in the trailer by smothering it with dirt. Sergeant Gibbs’ outstanding heroism prevented possible loss of life and equipment and reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
