The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry), [then Second Lieutenant] John D. Palmerlee (ASN: 0-481336), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Sicily, during July and August 1943. While manning a forward observation post during a fierce enemy counterattack, Lieutenant Palmerlee was subjected to heavy artillery and mortar fire. He remained at his post until the artillery fire he directed enabled his company to withdraw to a more favorable position. His action was instrumental in braking up several counterattacks and prevented the enemy from overrunning our positions. Lieutenant Palmerlee’s gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
