The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Ersul M. Pafford, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 1st Cavalry Reconnaissance Troop (Mechanized), 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in the vicinity of Aron, Maine, France, on 7 August 1944. While leading a reconnaissance and screening patrol on a hazardous mission, Staff Sergeant Pafford, despite intense hostile fire, skillfully maneuvered his men to strategic positions and at great personal risk, eliminated the enemy attempting to infiltrate our lines. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
