The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Technical Sergeant [then Staff Sergeant] James E. Osborne (ASN: 38212675), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company K, 3d Battalion, 18th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in the vicinity of Eisern, Germany, on 30 March 1945. When assault elements were impeded by an intense machine gun concentration from a strongly fortified enemy emplacement and a platoon sergeant was wounded, Sergeant Osborne courageously crossed perilous terrain and unhesitatingly assumed command. He then fearlessly directed accurate fire, inflicted severe casualties, destroyed the hostile strongpoint and captured a large group of prisoners. Sergeant Osborne’s gallant actions and outstanding leadership were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
