The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Sergeant Solomona Uli, United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy in Korea, on 30 July 1963, while serving as a Squad Leader of Company A, 1st Battle Group, 8th Cavalry, 1st Cavalry Division. Sergeant Uli demonstrated courage, sound judgment, and professional skill when three soldiers became trapped inside an uncharted minefield near the South Tape of the Demilitarized Zone while conducting an area search for a North Korean patrol which had infiltrated the Battle Group’s sector. With outstanding leadership, he immediately ordered the men not to move. Then, with perseverance and complete disregard for his own personal safety, he began the dangerous and tedious task of probing for mines through heavy foliage and underbrush. After probing approximately thirty-five meters into the minefield, he reached his three comrades and led them to safety through the area he had probed. Sergeant Uli’s unselfish and heroic actions in this hazardous situation are in the highest traditions of the United States Army and reflect great credit upon himself.
