The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to First Lieutenant (Field Artillery) Wayne E. Palmer (ASN: 0-832385), United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy of the United States while serving with Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 58th Armored Field Artillery Battalion, 3d Infantry Division, in action in Korea. On 12 December 1950, near Majon-dong, Korea, during an artillery withdrawal from that area a fire started in the powder increments alongside one of the howitzers. At its outbreak the cannoneers, assigned to the gun, fled, leaving the chief of section alone to combat the blaze which had soon ignited the oil-soaked tarpaulin covering the artillery piece. Lieutenant Goodrich, learning of the fire, voluntarily rushed to the section chief’s assistance and worked tirelessly in the face of grave danger to bring the fire under control, preventing the explosion of already opened ammunition and the complete destruction of the weapon. Lieutenant Goodrich’s quick thinking in a desperate emergency and outstanding bravery reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
