The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Navy Cross (Posthumously) to Corporal Weldon Darwood Harris (MCSN: 658852), United States Marine Corps, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy of the United Nations while serving as a Fire Team Leader in Company F, Second Battalion, Fifth Marines, FIRST Marine Division (Reinforced), in action against enemy aggressor forces near Seoul, Korea, on 23 and 24 September 1950. On 23 September after leading his fire team to the crest of a strongly defended hill, Corporal Harris was painfully wounded by hostile grenade fragments and, refusing to be evacuated, continued to lead the attack against well-defended enemy positions until the ammunition supply was exhausted and he had to withdraw his squad. Remaining overnight with his men, he reorganized his group the next day, and, while leading a bold assault in the face of intense hostile fire, was again wounded. Although suffering from loss of blood and severe pain, he resolutely directed a vigorous attack despite heavy opposition from numerically superior troops. Fatally wounded during this action, Corporal Harris, by his indomitable fighting spirit, courageous leadership and unwavering devotion to duty, contributed to the successful completion of his company’s mission, thereby upholding the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
